  • What is a Spectrum Analyser

Finding Affordable, High Quality Spectrum Analysers

A spectrum analyser is a device that is used with other types of broadcast equipment in the fields of cinematography, broadcasting and content creation to measure the power of the frequency spectrum of audio and radio frequency (RF) signals.

Analysers are items of professional equipment that offer a reliable and convenient visual representation of signal amplitude (strength) as it varies by signal frequency. Each analyser has its own illuminated LCD display screen where the amplitude of the signal is represented by the vertical axis, and the frequency is represented by the horizontal axis.

    What it is used for

For those involved in cinematography, broadcasting or content creation, reliable and trustworthy transmission is vital, regardless of the conditions on set. Furthermore, what is important is not just the quality of the broadcast equipment used. It is the signal strength that matters as well, and signal strength is often dependent on the amount of RF interference locally. With so much at stake, the engineers at Teradek LLC were tasked with developing a spectrum analyser that addressed this crucial problem and makes it much easier to find interference-free channels to use.

The Bolt range of Spectrum Analysers

    Teradek Bolt

The solutions our engineers came up with are practical and high quality, yet affordable.

Teradek have an enviable track record of developing high-quality professional equipment and are now able to offer a choice of three high specification spectrum analysers - the Bolt 500, Bolt 1000 and Bolt 3000. Each of these devices share many of the premium features that have made Teradek’s spectrum analysers so popular.

At the same time, each model has their own unique set of features that have been developed to meet the high demands of professional cinematographers, broadcasters and content creators.

The main difference between the models is their operating range. The Bolt 3000 has a 3,000 ft operating range, the Bolt1000 has a 1,000ft range and the Bolt500‘s range is 500ft. If you are looking for a spectrum analyzer that utilises 20MHz channels the Bolt range can help. The Bolt 3000 also offers 24 x 20Mhz channels (although it cannot utilize interlaced, PSF, or 1080p60/50 at this time).

The Bolt 1000 and 3000 are smaller and lighter than previous models and have better heat resistance.

The Bolt range of spectrum analysers has been designed to complement your existing broadcasting equipment. You can be certain that Teradek has designed a device that not only meets your requirements but that each device has been manufactured by a company dedicated to producing high-quality spectrum analysers at affordable prices.

  • The Kandao Obsidian Professional 360° VR Camera

The Kandao Obsidian Professional 360° VR Camera
Virtual Reality (VR) rose from obscurity back in 2015 to become a trend in under three years. And, now, VR videos are getting insanely popular all over the globe. Mind you, we are no longer just talking about immersive gaming technology; but the remarkable ability to create super spherical flicks and amazing VR videos using 360° cameras.

VR videos provide a first-person visual experience to give you the impression that you are present at the scene. They also give you a sense of depth as you can look around and see what is happening in every direction. However, you need to adhere to specific parameters for movement and placement of the 360° cams.

    Capturing a VR Video

When filming with a 360° professional camera equipment, there is no "behind the camera" situation as the camera's field of view spans around the whole environment encircling it. Thus, you need to clear all clutter, or at least ensure that you do not mind having the things or activities around you in the video.

Camera placement is highly dependent on your storyline. The role that you want the viewers to play in the video should guide you. If you want them to spectate, then you should place the camera outside the activity. But if you want them to feel like participants, then you set the camera at the heart of the activity. Remember to place the 360° camera approximately 6 ft high for an eye-level visual experience.

The 360° camera needs to move in all directions. You should ensure that the camera's movements are smooth and stable. However, whoever or whichever device moves the camera will appear in the final footage. Although, it is possible to edit them out.

    Meet the Kandao Obsidian

Several tech giants took Facebook's decision to make its 360° 3D video capturing system (Surround 360) open source as a challenge. Many companies went back to the drawing board, but a year later, only three earned Facebook's recognition. Among them the Obsidian R: an 8K high-resolution 360° VR professional camera from the little-known, China-based Kandao Studio.

The Obsidian R captures 360° photos in 8k resolution using a system of six integrated fish-eye lenses. It then employs a seamless "one-click" software to stitch footage at one frame per second to generate high-quality stereoscopic panoramas.

    Kandao Obsidian R

The "one-click" software speeds up the post-production process by eliminating complex steps. The system allows you to complete 3D panoramas with just a touch of a button, literally. The camera also learns your preferences and stitches your footage automatically after a short period of use.

The palm-sized Kandao Obsidian is light, rugged, and highly portable. It features three powering options: an external 12V charger, two batteries, or an Ethernet cable. The Ethernet cable facilitates file transfers and image setting controls thus eliminating the need for slow HDMI cables and costly HDMI capture cards.

The Obsidian's suite of software solutions with a comprehensive range of rich functionalities is perhaps what earned it the 2017 CES' "Best of Innovation Honoree" in the Digital Imaging Product Category. It comes standard with new-user-friendly software for stitching, editing, post-processing, video encoding, and live streaming. The only downside is that you have to purchase a license for live broadcasting.

  • Grant Petty Blackmagic Production Camera 4K Update 04/09/2013

    3D 4K CAMERA 2

Hi, I just want to give you an update on the 4K camera. As we mentioned a few weeks ago, we received the production sensors much later than we expected. When we built cameras from them we saw some big differences in the images between these production sensors vs the pre production samples we originally received. What this means is that we have been working over the last few weeks to replace a bunch of the software in the camera that handles the sensor calibration and image processing.

It’s taking a bit longer than we expected to do this and we think its going to take about 3 to 4 weeks more to get those changes done and to get the QA process completed before we can start shipping. We apologize for the delays from the original promised date. Ultimately, image calibration is a very important step so we want to make sure this is done properly before shipping.Regards,Grant Petty Blackmagic Design

  • BLACKMAGIC CINEMA Camera Shipping Update: 1/14

    Mon Jan 14, 2013 4:32 pm

    Hi,

Wanted to send out a quick update on camera shipments. The production lines have been up and running with sensors coming in. We have been sending out regular shipments of EF model cameras each week to all of our offices around the world, and each week we are getting cameras out at a faster rate. We are still not at full volume shipping though, because sensors are not quite getting to us at a pace that I could say was full volume. But each day I am seeing the volume get better from the sensor company. I am happy with the quality of the sensors.

For the MFT model, we want to get through some more of the EF orders before I give a date on when we will start getting the MFT orders out. They are ready to go, but we need to get through most of the early EF pre-orders first.

I have been blown away seeing all the footage coming from people with their cameras around the world. It's been very exciting to watch the camera doing such fantastic creative work!

    Regards,

    Grant
