SUPERB OPTICAL PERFORMANCE
The optical design of the lens is new, with the deployment of 15 lens elements in 12 lens groups. The use of two types of aspherical lens elements, in conjunction with two ultra-low dispersive (UD) lens elements (Super Spectra coatings are optimised for each individual element), keeps image quality high by minimising flare and chromatic aberration, whilst eliminating colour blurring around the edges of a subject, providing higher levels of resolution and contrast.

A constant f/4 aperture throughout the zoom focal lengths of the lens allows for excellent image reproduction in low light. It also enables the use of faster shutter speeds and can be used to creatively isolate subjects from the background.

The lens' ring-type USM autofocus motor combines with a high-performance CPU and optimised AF algorithms to provide ultra-responsive, accurate, near-silent autofocus.
FULL-TIME MANUAL FOCUSING
As well as its fast AF system the lens also offers full-time manual focusing, even during AF. This helps to ensure that you can accurately and precisely fine-tune the autofocus and stay in control.
The EF24-70mm f/4L IS USM zoom has a newly revised shape with carefully positioned controls, including focusing and zoom rings that have been designed for easy use. The focus distance range selector and Image Stabilizer switches are shaped to prevent unintentional movement.
NEW 4-STOP IMAGE STABILIZER SYSTEM
The lens features a newly designed 4-stop Image Stabilizer that allows photographers to shoot hand-held at up to four stops slower than normal. This means hand-held shooting of moving subjects is much easier than with a non-IS lens.
EXCELLENT MACRO CAPABILITIES
The zoom lens also incorporates Hybrid IS, which effectively compensates for angular and shift shake during macro shooting – this ensures photographers get stable close-ups when they’re shooting macro subjects.
The lens’ new macro function optimises the placement of lens groups for macro photography, allowing shooting at a maximum magnification of 0.7x and down to a close focusing distance of just 0.38m (throughout the zoom range) from subjects.
CIRCULAR APERTURE FOR BEAUTIFUL BACKGROUND BLUR
The lens incorporates a nine-blade circular aperture to help you make the subject really stand out from the background, whilst achieving a pleasing background blur.
DURABLE, DUST & WEATHER RESISTANT
This zoom lens has a dust-proof and drip-proof construction and a lock function stops the lens slipping out when being carried, thus preventing any possible lens barrel damage. Fluorine coating minimises the amount of dust, dirt and fingerprints that adhere to the front and rear lenses – thus helping to maintain superior image quality and reduce the need for cleaning.
A ring-type USM autofocus motor, combined with a high-speed CPU and optimised AF algorithm, delivers super-fast and near-silent AF with precision. It also provides full-time manual focus so that you can adjust the focus with the focus ring, without first having to switch the lens to manual focus. This allows you to adjust the focus accurately to ensure it is exactly where you want it to be for the most creative control possible.
The Image Stabilizer in a Canon lens works by shifting a stabilizer group of elements to compensate for motion detected by a gyroscope in the lens. Once activated, the Image Stabilizer provides the equivalent of up to four stops of shutter speed, so you can shoot hand-held and capture acceptably sharp images at much slower speeds. For movie shooting with a tripod, the IS mechanism can be left switched on. The lens will detect it is mounted on a tripod and the IS optics will be locked in place so they cannot move. If vibration is detected the IS will then activate to remove vibrations.
While many lenses have featured an Image Stabilizer (IS) function, the EF24-70mm f/4L IS USM lens also includes Canon’s Hybrid IS system that’s designed to offer advantages when shooting macro subjects. It’s the advantage of building IS into lenses rather than into the camera body – with the IS in the lens it can be tailored to suit the exact needs of the lens rather than using a ‘one-size fits all’ approach.
A normal IS system works by detecting angular movement (movement around a point). When using longer focal length lenses or shooting at normal shooting distances, this angular movement is very effective. However, when shooting close in, the angular movement no longer looks like a rotation around a point. Instead, it looks like the whole camera has shifted in a parallel fashion. This requires a different type of Image Stabilisation, and this is what the Hybrid IS system provides.
SUPER SPECTRA COATING
Applied to the majority of lenses in the Canon EF lens range, the Super Spectra coating helps to reduce reflections from the camera sensor that can otherwise cause flare and ghosting. The coating also helps to keep the colour balance of the lenses constant across the lens range, such that the colour characteristics of each lens are the same.
ULTRA-LOW DISPERSION (UD) LENS ELEMENTS
UD lens elements are used to correct for colour aberration and produce a high contrast image with good sharpness and definition. The EF24-70mm f/4L IS USM features two UD lenses to provide the highest image quality possible.
Keeping lenses clean is important to ensuring the best image quality possible. To help with this, both the front and rear lens element are coated with fluorine which acts as a non-stick, easy-to-clean surface to help with the removal of dust and dirt or oils left by fingerprints or from the atmosphere. Fluorine is also used on the filters covering the CMOS sensor in the camera and the rear LCD panels of several EOS models for the same reason.
