After we saw this brilliant Nicholas Cage Matrix from The Shiznit, we knew we had to make something similar for the accomplished actor Sean Bean. The Nic Cage matrix shows all of his films plotted on a graph according to how brilliant (questionable) they were, and how serious or mental they were. That concept works for Nic, but we’re pretty sure Sean Bean hasn’t been in many bad films or T.V series, so instead we chose to measure the other thing he’s famous for; dying.

That’s right, whenever Sean Bean is in a film he’s known as the “Two-legged spoiler” because you can say with relative confidence that whatever character he plays is inevitably doomed. In fact Bean has died no less than 25 times over his film career, and 5 times in just the past 5 years. This matrix doesn’t even plot all of the films he has died in, because we simply just couldn’t fit them on.

Usually Sean Bean dies on camera because he’s the evil character, and it’s only fair that he meets his doom; but none of us wanted him as Ned Stark to die. Between 2010 and now, he died in Ca$h (shot), Death Race 2 (shot), Black Death (gets plague then gets quartered), Age of Heroes (dies in a firefight), and Game of Thrones (beheaded).

We’ve plotted his deaths from the most pathetic; where he stabs himself in the TV series Tell Me That You Love Me because he is an obsessed lover who doesn’t get his attentions returned, to the most gruesome in Patriot Games where he is impaled on an anchor then blown up.

At least all this experience has made him able to put on a great performance when he does die. We wonder what will happen in his upcoming films Legends, and Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters….

Capturing high quality video is now easier than ever with new technologies surfacing which aid the users of a camcorder in taking footage which is film worthy. The rise of low cost camcorder equipment has created a new wave of at home amateurs looking to create the next big viral video, which has helped the camcorder industry strive and ship more equipment which is priced out of the reach of mere consumers.

Three of the very best camcorders money can buy for under £5500 currently are the Sony PMW 150, Sony PMW 200 and Canon XF305. All three of these camcorders are excellent for capturing high quality video, but which one is better for you? Let’s take a look.

Sony PMW 150

The Sony PMW 150 costs £4,435 and is the cheapest camcorder on our list. It features three 1/3-inch-type Full-HD sensors, the ability to capture Full HD MPEG HD422 at 50 Mbps and out of the box comes with a fixed 20x zoom lens with wide-angle 29.5mm.

The lenses and sensors within the PMW 150 are very much professional. You will be able to enjoy slow and quick motion capture from 1 fps to 50 fps, and the camcorder also supports MPEG HD 420 in MP4 file format, which is compatible with XDCAM EX camcorders and DVCAM at 25 Mbps.

Around the back of the camcorder you will find a 3.5-inch LCD panel and viewfinder to aid in the capturing of essential footage, and the compact design of the PMW 150 ensures that you will be comfortable using it for the duration of shooting.

Sony PMW 200

As the name implies, the PMW 200 is a step above the PMW 150. Rolling in at £5,310, it is also the most expensive camcorder on our list by a large margin. The PMW 200 features three 1/2-inch Exmor CMOS sensors (bigger than the PMW 150′s), and has the ability to shoot Full HD 422 at 50 Mbps.

A step above the PMW 150, the PMW 200 includes a 14x Fujinon professional HD zoom Lens with three independent rings with end stops and Sony have included two SxS memory card slots on the camcorder allowing for around 4 hours of continuous recording.

Like the 150 listed above, the 200 has a 3.5-inch LCD display and viewfinder around the back, and has been designed in a way to make it comfortable to carry and hold.

Canon XF305

The only non Sony branded camcorder on our list, the Canon XF305 costs £4,620 and features a trusty 18x L-series HD Video Lens with 29.3mm wide angle. Much like the PMW 150 above, the Canon XF305 has three 1/3 type CMOS sensors.

The active video lens on the XF305 is a reliable and tested set up. It is a 18x L-series HD Video Lens, with f/1.6 max., and 29.3mm wideangle (35mm equivalent). This allows for stunning footage, and ensures that multiple angles can be attained.

Like the best camcorders, around the back of the Canon XF305 is a 4-inch LCD display and viewfinder. The XF305 records MPEG-2 MXF (Media eXchange Format) files – up to 1920 x 1080 Full HD at 50Mbps.

Overall

As with most things in life, the most expensive camcorder on this list has the best set up. The Sony PMW 200 has the best lenses of the three, whilst the Canon has the best LCD display. Feature set wise, the Sony PMW 150 and Canon XF305 are very close, and are separated in price by just a few hundred pounds. Either of these camcorders will serve you well, however if you have specific needs, we recommend getting in to touch with 3D Broadcast Sales today for more information.

Recently you may have heard about Twitter releasing a brand new service called Vine. This service allows you to create 6 second videos which can act as gifs (Animated images) to display in their twitter feeds. This service could be something that is great for people with their mobile phones, but what about those that like to live in the higher resolution side of things? Don’t worry, we’ve got that covered too.

Cinemegraphs, The High Resolution Version of Vine

Cinemagraphs are still photos which have been transformed into animated pictures, usually in .gif format. The term was coined by two photographers from the US called Kevin Burg and Jamie Beck. They used the technique to bring fashion and news photographs to life in 2011. Cinemagraphs give the illusion of video but are in fact just a sequence of subtly different photographs strung together to depict movement. Typically the cinemagraphs show slight movements, in hair and clothing as if in the breeze, liquids being poured or vehicles moving.

See some more examples of Cinemegraphs

They have become an exciting trend for photographers and because they are not too technically difficult to create even those with basic computer skills can make animated pictures. The key is to have a well-composed image that would work well on its own. This means good light, an interesting focal point and so on. Then you have to take a video of the scene. If using people they have to stay very still, and whatever the subject a tripod should be used to reduce movement.

Then you can use Photoshop editing software to select the frames, add layers and filters and create your cinemagraph. You will end up with a smooth transition of animated pictures that show slight movements, creating a subtle air of animation that evokes a sense of movement. A full tutorial on creating your own cinemagraphs can be found here: http://fernandojbaez.com/cinemagraph-tutorial/.

The results can be incredibly hypnotic and you can create your animations out of all sorts of pictures. For some great examples go here: http://www.tripwiremagazine.com/2011/07/cinemagraphs.html. There is loads of inspiration to be found online and creating cinemagraphs is something that anyone with a camera and digital editing software can do.

So next time you’re out and about with your camera why not skip taking still photographs for a change and set up for a short video. The results can be incredibly pleasing and it’s quite likely you’ll soon be hooked on this simple but effective technique. Let your imagination run wild and put your creative skills to the test and who knows what you could end up with. Most importantly, don’t forget to share your creations with the world via your blog or social networking pages.

As winter grips the nation news programmes and social networking sites are being flooded with images of the snow-covered landscapes. The images can be beautiful and dramatic but are not always easy to capture.

The bright white scenes can play havoc with exposure levels and some digital cameras are better at dealing with the conditions than others. The sensors aim to find a middle ground and often struggle with the brilliant white, meaning shots that are under-exposed and snow that becomes grey. You can adjust the settings of your camera to overcome these problems in a few steps.

Start by framing the shot and focusing then zoom to a bright area and set the exposure compensation to between +2/3 to +1 2.3 EV. Take a meter reading then switch to full annual and enter the settings. This will mean a slight overexposure to keep the snow crisp and clean but other objects will not be blown out. If you are unsure how to operate the manual settings on your camera then play around with different options and make a note of which work the best. Some cameras have a snow setting which should do a pretty good job of dealing with the light conditions.

You can also experiment with the shutter speed when the snow is coming down. Use a tripod to steady the image and use a slow speed to create a blur of movement. A fast shutter speed will freeze the snow as it comes down.

Be creative with your shots and try to think outside the box. Go for a different angle, throw the focus or highlight details in the snow to create unusual, unique and original snow photos.

And finally, don’t forget to dress warm with a waterproof layer on top. Head out early to capture the snow before it starts to melt or be disturbed by footprints and make sure batteries are charged and keep the camera in the bag until it is time to start shooting. When you get home, keep your camera cool for a while so that it can readjust gradually to avoid compensation, but get yourself warm quicker with a well-deserved cuppa!

Mon Jan 14, 2013 4:32 pm

Hi,

Wanted to send out a quick update on camera shipments. The production lines have been up and running with sensors coming in. We have been sending out regular shipments of EF model cameras each week to all of our offices around the world, and each week we are getting cameras out at a faster rate. We are still not at full volume shipping though, because sensors are not quite getting to us at a pace that I could say was full volume. But each day I am seeing the volume get better from the sensor company. I am happy with the quality of the sensors.

For the MFT model, we want to get through some more of the EF orders before I give a date on when we will start getting the MFT orders out. They are ready to go, but we need to get through most of the early EF pre-orders first.

I have been blown away seeing all the footage coming from people with their cameras around the world. It’s been very exciting to watch the camera doing such fantastic creative work!

Regards,
