en-US Broadcast Equipment Blog | 3D Broadcast Sales Equipment reviews, news and tips Wed, 03 Sep 2014 06:56:27 +0000 http://fishpig.co.uk/magento/wordpress-integration/?v= http://www.3dbroadcastsales.com/blog/ Canon EOS 6D – the new canon entry level full frame DSLR professional camera eos_6dThe Canon EOS 6D, along with the Nikon D600, represent a new market segment in professional cameras, the mid range full frame DSLRs. While the Canon EOS 6D has some great features, one of the most impactful of these may be its price, coming in at nearly £1000 cheaper than the Canon EOS 5D mark III.

Comparing it to it’s bigger, more expensive, brother gives an interesting picture. The Canon EOS 6D has 20.2m megapixels, while the Canon EOS 5D mark III has 22.3m megapixels, both of them with a full frame CMOS sensor. They have the same ISO range (100-25600 standard, 50-102800 expanded) but the Canon EOS 6D has 11 autofocus points, while the Canon EOS 5D mark III has a massive 61!

The viewfinder on the Canon EOS 6D is slightly substandard, giving only 97% visibility while the Canon EOS 5D mark III has full 100% visibility, and the Canon EOS 6D has only a single SD card slot for recording while the Canon EOS 5D mark III can accept compact flash as well.

Where the Canon EOS 6D really shines however is the weight, it’s a full 180 grams lighter than the Canon EOS 5D mark III, and also its ability to capture images in low light conditions – The Canon EOS 6D can capture images down to -3 EV, a full stop dimmer than the Canon EOS 5D mark III and equivalent to a night lit by a full moon.

Wifi and GPS have been integrated as standard into the Canon EOS 6D, while they are available as an additional extra on the Canon EOS 5D mark III, making the substantively lower price tag of the Canon EOS 6D even more attractive to the budget conscious photographer looking for a first professional camera. This gives the option of controlling the camera remotely via a smartphone, a feature which many photographers will find a useful additional to their arsenal of tools.

The silent shutter mode implemented in the Canon EOS 5D mark III has been replicated in the Canon EOS 6D for quieter, more discreet shooting, but there are other features of the Canon EOS 5D mark III which have been left off such as the ability to record data files in RAW format, including jpeg only. There’s no touchscreen which is more unusual as the Canon EOS 650D included this, and the Canon EOS 6D is essentially a full frame version of the Canon EOS 650D. It also misses out on on-chip phase detection to aid in autofocus while in live view or movie mode.

The Canon EOS 6D is a great professional camera, and a good addition to the Canon EOS range. It’s price makes it an attractive entry point into the full frame camera market, while retaining the familiarity of handling and use with the other professional cameras in the Canon EOS range.

TV Logic HD Monitors - Broadcast Equipment With Options TV Logic MonitorFor those who need reliable broadcast equipment, TVLogic has been putting out reliable monitors for many years now. Those who have had experiences with TVLogic monitors find that they really like them as they are a reliable workhorse. The weight of these monitors is quite light and this makes them easier to mount onto the camera.

TVLogic Monitors – Set Up Options

There are several TVLogic monitors to choose from, three are commonly used today. The monitor is cost-effective and provides great picture performance. The high resolution on the screen makes detail in images a lot more noticeable. Focus checking is simplified, especially when one is shooting in 4K.

There is a feature called the 058W which is similar to previous models with the 056W. There are 3G HDSDI and HDMI inputs. The HDMI out is useful if you want to set up another monitor feed or if you only have a SDI or a single HDMI output.

The Vectorscope and Waveform displays provide exposure control with a side luma zone which provides for over range error checking and a false colour. The focus assist helps to provide critical focus and a zoom mode where the picture can be checked for focus. The overscan/underscan modes provide the normal aspect ratio markers with safe area overlays. For those DSLR shooters, the monitors allow one to take their output from it and scale the images so that they fill the screen.

Size Choices

Currently available is the 55”, the 46” and the 42”. These are all great choices; it is a matter of need as well as personal taste. These monitors have three assignable function buttons. Instead of going into a menu to assign functions that are used often, one just needs to press and hold the button down.

Once a few seconds have passed, there is a drop down menu that appears containing all available options which allows the user to scroll through to the function they want using a scroll wheel, then pressing it to select that function. This makes it simple to change assigned functions as needed.

The next noticeable difference between monitor sizes is the size of the image. The smaller monitors do not provide as sharp and clear an image because of the size of the screen that displays the image. The colours of all sizes of monitor are accurate.

If you wish you can makes use of the calibration utility that is available on all models and sizes of monitor. The display settings once calibrated can be saved as an LUT within the monitor. The LUT capabilities can prove extremely useful for those shooting with Log.

What is the Weight Range?

Another serious difference between the 55”, 46” and 42” monitors is the weight of the monitor. The 55” is 57.5 kgs, the 46” is 43.0 kgs and the 42” is 30.2 kgs. The weight of these monitors can make a significant difference, depending upon the set up that you use with your broadcast equipment.

One can also playback recent recordings quickly with the built in speaker for audio monitoring and the headphone jack. If it is preferable to monitor audio levels visually, on screen audio meters are also available. The monitors are designed with a magnesium alloy housing making them attractive and reliable. The button layout makes it simple for those who need a good broadcast equipment set up to access what is needed to get the work done easily.

This handheld camcorder & DSLR equipment bundle is a real find! Panasonic DMC-GH4 LUMIX G Camera Bundled with the Panasonic DMW-YAGHE 4K Interface UnitOne of our latest exciting broadcast equipment bundles is the combined package of the Panasonic DMC-GH4 LUMIX G Camera and the Panasonic DMW-YAGHE 4K Interface Unit.

It features the GH4's new live MOS Sensory and Venue Engine, which combined reduces noise while increasing resolution and innovating colour reproduction. The introduction of progressive DFD technology has increased the speed of Contrast AF. The Panasonic DMC-GH4 LUMIX G was the world's first DSLM camera to record 4K videos and truly meet the demands of the Broadcast and DSLR equipment market. Combined with the professional interface unit from Panasonic, this bundle is capable of significantly powerful video transmission and advanced real time video output in Full HD via SDI and audio input via XLR.

This bundle is capable of satisfying the needs of both photographers and cinematographers alike. It's innovatively designed 16.05 mega pixel Digital Live MOS Sensor for the GH4 delivers both sensitivity, response and controls rolling shutter effect, even when using the electronic shutter function. By far its most impressive feature is the Venus Engine image processor, which delivers high-speed signal processing, as a result of its new quad-core CPU, capably capturing 4K video.

The GH4 features superior noise reduction systems and allows shooting at maximum ISO 25,600. That is not all. The picture quality is outstanding, with sensitivity, gradation performance, resolution and colour reproduction; all of which have been dramatically improved in Panasonic's latest hand held camcorder. It captures a phenomenal 12 frames per second, delivering high speed burst shooting, capable of capturing even the fastest moving of subjects.

The hand held camcorder properties' include advanced high-precision, high-speed dual Organic Light-Emitting Diode displays or OLEDs of 2,359K-dot LVF (Live View Finder) and 1,036K-dot rear monitor. Combined this achieves a high speed response with a minimum time lag while heightening the resolution. Most impressively, the OLED for the LVF contained within the GH4 boasts 10,000:1 high contrast for superior colour reproduction. Indeed, the high-precision Contrast AF system in the hand held camera benefits from Panasonic's combination of DFD (Depth from Defocus) technology, which condenses the time to focus achieving ultra high speed AF and enhanced operability due to the added feature of Face/Eye Detection AF or 49-point AF with Custom Multi AF mode.

This is a hardy handheld camcorder, tough enough to withstand the rigours of heavy field use. The main structure of the GH4 consists of a magnesium alloy full die cast front and rear frame. Chrosziel & Metabones lens mount adapters – A comparison The decision to buy lens mount adapters is usually motivated by the desire to use a lens on a camera for which it was not initially designed for. No particular brand can claim to have an exclusively “superlative” set of lenses. There exists a few standout or unique lenses in any line of lenses, and the ability to use such lenses on your specific camera brand allows you to attain the best possible result. Besides seeking exceptional images through a unique lens combination, lens adaptors can also be used to make good use of lenses that were acquired earlier; lenses that would otherwise remain unused.

Chrosziel PL NEX 34 Lens Mount Adaptor for PL lenses on NEX CamerasThe Chrosziel lens adapter allows one to use PL lenses on NEX mount cameras. So, professional PL mounted cinema lenses like Leica, Angenieux, and Zeiss can be used on Sony E-mount cameras, like the Sony NEX-FS100 using Chrosziel lens adapters. However, this adapter is only a physical mount, which implies that any electronic communication with the lens to the camera will not be available.

This adapter has a built-in adjustment to control the back focus distance. By rotating the locking outer ring on the adapter, the user can adjust the physical distance between the E-mount bayonet and the PL receptor. This enables the user to calibrate the flange back or back focus distance, to ensure that the focus witness marks on any PL lens used will be 100 percent accurate, and that PL zooms will track focus properly through the whole zoom range. This is a particularly vital feature for the FS700 and FS100 since they do not have in-built back focus adjustments.

Basically, the Sony E-mount was designed to only support the weight of light-weight DSLR type lenses, so the adapter offers a support post that can be attached to 15/19mm rails through a bracket to help them carry the weight of heavy PL lenses without exerting too much stress on the camera’s E-mount.

Metabones Speed Booster Canon EF to Sony E Mount AdapterMetabones lens mount adapters, on the other hand, are designed to allow the use of Canon EF lenses on Sony NEX E-mount Cameras. Metabone’s “Smart electronic adapter” is a manual focus-only adapter, though it provides control for the aperture using the image stabilizer found in Canon IS lenses.

Compared to Metabones, Chrosziel adapters are purely mechanical, which means that focusing and aperture control can only be done manually. So, whenever the lens is set at f/8, it is also stopped down to f/8. The user can focus with the lens wide open, like f/2, then stop the lens down manually using its aperture ring, like f/8, then open it up to f/2 for the next shot. It seems cumbersome, but it is also very practical and useful, particularly for tripod-based shooting, or for countering focus shift. The electronic aspect of Metabones allows autofocus and auto-aperture control, though they have a bigger risk of failure compared to simple mechanical adjusting.

The quality of adapters varies widely, but when faced with the choice between Chrosziel and Metabones, it is recommended that you buy lens mount adapters for each lens that you intend to use. The alternative would be to carry two lens caps and constantly swap the adapter.

4K Up Scaling Is Big News For Movie Fans 4k image4K technology – is this yet another technical gimmick in the world of technology? Without doubt, once you have seen a 4K film you will not think so. Having a keen interest in broadcast technology, I decided to research 4K and see what all the fuss was about.

Jacob and Marie Scwartz made a breathtaking and beautiful film of their experiences on St John in the U.S. Virgin Islands, using a professional video camera in 4K. The results are stunning. High resolution images like nothing you have ever seen before in full HD, depict the Island like you were actually there and walking in their footsteps. The film's focus on insects, animals and their habitats is shown in exquisite detail. Moreover, the sharpness of life-like capture enables you to experience the depth, texture and minutest details in the timeless stone ruins, the delicacy of the leaves on the palm trees and the rich vibrancy of the colours in the sky, on the beaches, on the forest floor and in the water.

However, 4K technology isn't just for the realms of Hollywood or National Geographic, you can buy professional cameras from most reputable stockists. 4K cameras are perfect for recording and then slowing motion down when it is edited to appreciate the finest of details. This can be best appreciated if you watch Dubai Films sky dive film on YouTube. Watching the guys carrying out their sky dive is shown in awesome detail, as they skim the water on their descent you can appreciate every spray in the water as if you were up close.  4K Videos utilise displays with an aspect ratio of 16:9 and are capable of showcasing video at  resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 pixels or 8.3 million pixels.

In terms of the consumer market there are two cameras with 4K Video technology and the capability of professional video cameras. These are the Panasonic Lumix GH4 and the Sony FDR-AX100. Both cameras will provide budding film-makers with a way to create 4K content to watch on their 4K computers or televisions. For bike enthusiasts, adrenalin junkies and sportsmen the 400 Go Pro Hero3+ Black Camera can also film in 4K, although it can only capture 15 frames per second. Panasonic plans to introduce its own 4K wearable camera, the HX-A500, in May, capable of 25 frames per second.

The latest news in the world of 4K has been Sony's announcement of its involvement in the 2014 Fifa World Cup. The technology giant, who is an official FIFA partner are among the broadcast manufacturing companies at the forefront of 4K technology, having designed a significant number of 4K compatible products such as TVs, home theatre projectors and professional video cameras, providing unique and detailed 4K live production solutions, from shooting to production, then viewing. Sony plan to produce three full matches between June and July 2014, to further promote the benefits of 4K technology in capturing live action.

If you buy a professional video camera with 4K technology you will be able to shoot the most amazing high resolution music videos, television productions, television commercials, sport, documentaries, interviews and feature films just like the professionals.

Canon CN7x17 KAS S: Cinematic lens technology now handheld for increased flexiblity Canon CN7x17 KAS S Camera LensCanon has recently launched its first servo lens that can be held by hand, mounted on your shoulder or on a tripod, and allows the creation of cinematic images regardless of how you shoot. The Canon CN7x17 KAS S is a highly impressive lens that is perfect for shooting scenes where movement is essential to the composition. So, if you're looking for the must buy camera lens that's versatile and highly impressive, look no further than the Canon CN7x17 KAS S.

Canon CN7x17 KAS S: Features

The Canon CN7x17 KAS S offers amazing 4K optical performance due to Canon lens technology and has been designed for Super35mm cameras. The servo drive unit allows for both hand-held and broadcast production, while the lens is effective for most situations as it's highly versatile with its 17mm-120mm focal length.

This lens has been built to last, which is quite clear as the robust build not only ensures a long service life but that it can be used in practically any environment. The Canon CN7x17 KAS S is both shockproof and weatherproof.

The newest addition to the Canon Cinema Lens line-up has been designed with the end-user in mind, offering a highly intuitive and familiar experience. It's the perfect option if you are looking to buy camera lens that offers a familiar shoulder-mounted ENG experience with a Super35 body, akin to the Canon C300 and C500. It's also compatible with a wide range of accessories used for shooting movies and broadcast programming.

The Canon CN7x17 KAS S also features integrated electronics that offer support for Cooke /I Technology, while the EF mount variety offers Canon EOS support. There's also a 12-pin lens communication option. These various options mean that a wide variety of production styles are supported and the lens can be connected to a wide range of cameras.

Excellent Performance and Flexibility

Canon has an extensive history in the production of optical equipment and they've used this experience to design a lens that offers incredible quality from the center of the image right to the very edge. A maximum T-number of T2.95, a focal length that goes from 17mm to 120mm, and the 7x zoom mean that it's unlikely you'll ever need another lens. The servo unit comes with an information display that's like the ones available on Canon ENG lenses and features quite a few controls, including Frame Preset, Speed Preset, and Shuttle Shot. The zoom speed can be set from a quick half a second all the way up to 300 seconds.

Designed for Broadcast and Movies

In broadcast-style shooting conditions, cine lenses are often impractical, which is why the Canon CN7x17 KAS S is ideal. It is relatively compact and quite light, meaning that it can be mounted on your shoulder easily. The rotation of the focus ring is 180°, creating an excellent balance between the accuracy 4K imaging requires and the speed broadcast usage demands.

Though designed specifically for broadcast productions, the Canon CN7x17 KAS S is also perfect for shooting movies.
